Love Beyond Borders: The First Crossing
Chapter Three – Stories by the Sea
Snippet / Teaser:
The morning air at Manila airport buzzed with noise, yet to Marina, everything felt muted. Walking beside Gabriel, her hands clenched tightly around her bag, she felt the weight of the moment — his flight to Lisbon called soon, and silence stretched between them like an unscalable wall. His eyes, clouded with emotion, mirrored the distance growing in her heart. ” ‘
The storm passed as quickly as it had come, leaving the air sharp with the scent of
wet earth and salt. Marina and Gabriel walked down from the lighthouse hill, their
shoes sinking slightly in the damp soil until they reached the shoreline below.
The sea stretched endlessly before them, restless but beautiful, its rhythm echoing
the unspoken beat of their hearts.
Marina bent to gather her long skirt, careful not to let the hem catch the waves.
She laughed as Gabriel struggled to balance on the uneven rocks, his camera slung
across his shoulder.
“You’re not used to this,” she teased.
He grinned, shaking his head. “Where I come from, the sea is different. Colder.
Wilder. But this… this feels alive.”
They walked slowly, the waves lapping at their ankles. Marina pointed out the
fishermen hauling in their nets, children chasing each other with kites, and the
rows of nipa huts lining the shore.
“This is my home,” she said softly. “I’ve never lived anywhere else.”
Gabriel turned his head to study her profile, the sunlight warming her damp hair.
“And you don’t dream of leaving?”
Marina hesitated, her gaze fixed on the horizon. “Sometimes,” she admitted. “But my
family is here. My father is gone, and my mother depends on me. I teach at the
school. I read fortunes for neighbors sometimes — palm lines, numbers… small things
that help them find hope.” She smiled faintly. “The world feels big, but my world
has always been small.”
Gabriel stopped walking. His expression softened, as though her words touched
something deep within him.
“My world,” he said quietly, “is the opposite. Too big. Always changing. I’ve been
moving since I was a boy — my father was a diplomat, and later I just… kept
traveling. But no matter how far I went, I never felt at home.”
Marina tilted her head, curious. “So why here? Why San Felipe?”
He hesitated, his hand tightening around the strap of his camera. “I lost someone.
She loved the Philippines — always talked about visiting. After she passed, I
thought… maybe if I came here, I’d feel closer to her. Maybe I’d find what she saw
in this place.”
Marina’s heart ached at the rawness in his voice. She didn’t press for details,
though she wondered about the woman he had lost. Instead, she reached down and
skimmed her hand across the water, the waves cooling her fingers.
“Maybe,” she said softly, “you came here for more than that.”
Their eyes met, and the silence between them deepened — not empty, but full of
something unnamed.
Gabriel lifted his camera then, almost shyly. “Can I take your picture?”
Marina laughed, shaking her head. “I’m not used to that.”
“Neither am I,” he admitted. “But… I want to remember this. You, here, with the sea.”
She finally nodded, and as he raised the lens, the wind tugged at her hair, the
ocean gleamed behind her, and for a moment, Marina De Vega became part of the
story Gabriel hadn’t known he was looking for.
When the shutter clicked, something shifted quietly between them — as if the first
chapter of their shared journey had just been written in the language of waves and
light.
